My Body, My TempleSeries: Causes of Suffering

Life Mantra: Where you are today is exactly where you need to be.

In chapter II verse 3 of the Yoga Sutras, we learn that the five causes of suffering are:

  • Avidya (Ignorance)
  • Asmita (Egoism/Pride)
  • Raga (Attachment)
  • Dvesa (Aversion)
  • Abinivesa (Fear)

Suffering creates disconnection and isolation. These are the common feelings associated with poor body image, eating disorders, and sexual abuse survivors. In My Body As My Temple series we are working to create wholeness, our inherent right.  I came across two blogs that help work through the causes of suffering. Both blogs are great tools to bring along with us as we continue our journey.  The first is Ordinary Courage by Dr. Brene Brown. Dr. Brown is a writer, researcher, and educator. She has published a book called I Thought It Was Just Me (but it isn’t). She explores concepts such as shame resilience, authenticity, courage, and compassion. She is going through her book on her blog with prompts and downloadable pod casts. The other blog that I thought would be an interesting tool in helping explore our bodies as our temples is  Unraveling Ways of Seeing Myself  (an 8 week e-course). Through photography and blogger prompts you begin to see yourself and your world around you in a new light.  It looks like the next one begins in July (the one in May was already filled). Would you sign up with me? It is always a treat to share these kind of journeys with a pal.
Love & Light,
Carrie
